A New Generation of Farming Leaders Gets a Life-Changing Opportunity to Drive Zimbabwe's Agricultural Future.
HARARE, Zimbabwe – For 45 ambitious young Zimbabweans, a dream once limited by circumstance is now within reach. Seated in the Andy Millar Hall, their faces reflected a mix of pride, hope, and determination. They are the first-ever recipients of the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society (ZAS) Scholarship Programme—a groundbreaking initiative set to change not only their lives but the very future of farming in the country.
The launch of this historic programme marks more than just a financial investment; it represents a profound belief in the power of young people to secure Zimbabwe’s food supply and drive its economic transformation. ZAS has committed an initial US$240,000 to provide these 45 deserving students from low-income families with fully-funded, three-year agricultural diplomas, covering everything from tuition to accommodation.
Speaking at the launch, Deputy Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Hon. D. Marapira, captured the feeling in the room, calling the programme a "defining moment" for the nation.
"We are not merely launching a scholarship; we are igniting a movement," he declared. "A movement that recognises that the journey to an empowered, food-secure, and economically vibrant Zimbabwe is paved by the minds and hands of our young people."
This is not just about charity; it's about strategy. The scholarship is a direct investment in training the hands-on, practical experts our farms, extension services, and value chains desperately need. It’s a targeted effort to bridge the gap between classroom theory and the real-world challenges of modern agriculture.
Dr. Vambe, the Director of Agricultural Education, highlighted this crucial link. "This partnership is not just financial, but very strategic," he explained. "ZAS is helping bridge the gap between industry expectations and our training outcomes. This ensures that our graduates are industry-ready from day one."
The programme’s impact will be felt across the country, with scholars set to attend leading institutions like Gwebi, Chibero, Mlezu, Esigodini, and more, becoming the backbone of a revitalised technical and extension system.
In his closing remarks, Dr. J. Dondofema, Director of Agriculture Education, spoke directly to the heart of the matter and to the students themselves. He stressed that this initiative is a long-term investment in the nation’s ability to feed itself and transform its agricultural landscape.
Addressing the 45 beneficiaries, his message was one of both opportunity and responsibility. "This is your moment. Your selection is a recognition of your potential and your promise," he told them, urging them to build a strong foundation for their careers and the communities they will one day serve.
