10 November 2024 | As the rainy season begins to sweep across the nation, farmers are encouraged to start planting. According to Professor Obert Jiri, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development, farmers should take immediate action to begin planting in areas where rainfall has been adequate.
“The rain season has started, and the planting season has also begun,” stated Prof. Jiri. “We have seen increased rainfall activity in most areas, near flooding in some places, and in regions where at least 20 millimeters of rainfall has been recorded over two or three days, farmers should proceed to plant.” Prof. Jiri emphasized that where rainfall has been sufficient, there is no reason to delay planting, provided agritex officers concur that the rain is effective.
Timing is critical in maximizing crops' growth potential. According to Prof. Jiri, "The rainfall activity is continuing to increase. Hopefully, in the next week, we will see rainfall activity in all areas, so there is no reason for farmers to hold back. They should plant once they have enough rainfall or if forecasts indicate rains are expected in the next few days."
Dry planting is also recommended. Dry planting, a technique where seeds are sown in anticipation of upcoming rains, is considered an agronomically sound practice. “It’s also allowed; it’s agronomically good to dry plant,” said Prof. Jiri. By doing so, farmers can ensure that their crops begin germinating as soon as the rain arrives.
Farmers are advised to monitor local weather patterns closely and to consult agritex officers to verify rainfall adequacy. The early onset of rains offers an excellent opportunity to plant various crops and increase yield potential for the season ahead.
